How to Use the Discussion List

Accessing the board

  1. Log in to the email discussion lists subscriptions page in My Academy on the AAFP Web site. The AAFP discussion lists are in alphabetical order. Both the EMR and Practice Management lists now have the bulletin board option.
  2. If you are new to the list, click the "Subscribe" button. The screen will refresh and you will see your three choices:
    • Individual messages as they are received -- With this option you will receive each message to the list as an individual message. This is how the list has operated in the past. You may also view and post messages on the Web.
    • Daily digest -- With this option you will receive one email per day that contains all the posts to the list for that day. You may also view and post messages on the Web.
    • Bulletin board only -- With this option you will not receive email from the list. You may only view and post messages on the Web.

  3. Choose the option that best suits the way you would like to receive messages and click the "Change preferences" button. After the screen refreshes, the link to the bulletin board appears below the "Change preferences" button. Click that link and you will then be logged in.
  4. If you are already subscribed to the list, the three choices appear. Click the one that suits you best and click the "Change preferences" button. The link to the bulletin board appears below the "Change preferences" button. Click the link to log in to the bulletin board.
  5. To return to the bulletin board at a future date, add the URL to your "favorites" or bookmarks or go to http://members.aafp.org/forum/emr. Each time you visit the bulletin board you will be asked to log in. This is because it is available only to AAFP members.

NEW FEATURES

Note: On the bulletin board the discussions are listed. New messages will not appear at the top of the list unless they are the first message of a new discussion. To check if there are any replies to a particular discussion, click the discussion's link.

Once you have logged in to the bulletin board, the most recent discussions are displayed. You now have the ability to sort discussions by date, subject, replies, and author by clicking the up/down arrows by the column headings. To the left you see the following links which represent new features. Here's what they do:

  • My forums -- This takes you to a list of the email forums to which you are already subscribed. If you are subscribed to both the EMR and Practice Management lists and wish to check messages on both, use this page. By clicking on the forum name you will be taken to that bulletin board. (NOTE: Only the EMR and Practice Management lists currently have this option.)
  • My account -- This is a handy way to get back to the AAFP's list of forums. From there you may subscribe or unsubscribe to any forum, or change your subscription options.
  • About this forum -- This gives you a summary of statistics about the forum. It tells you how many members are currently subscribed, how many messages posted in the last day, the last seven days, and the last 30 days. It also contains a link to the forum administrator's email should you have questions or comments.
  • Search -- Probably the most-requested feature! By clicking "Search" you may enter key word terms. Messages will be displayed if those terms are found anywhere in the subject line or the full text of the message. Messages can be sorted by date, subject line, number of replies, and author.
You may only search one forum at a time. To search a different forum, use the "Change Forum" link in the search box.

If you have questions about the new forum or if you have technical difficulties, email centerforhit@aafp.org.
