American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) directs funds to support the adoption, implementation, and effective use of health information technology in the US health care system. It also contains regulations for EHR systems that will qualify physicians for Medicare and Medicaid bonuses, in addition to new provisions for privacy and security that extend HIPAA.

The AAFP advocated for appropriate incentives and other provisions in the ARRA.  The AAFP will continue to advocate during the regulatory phase to maximize the benefits to members and their patients and to minimize the burden of compliance with the regulations.
