AAFP's Center for Health Information Technology is dedicated to increasing the availability and use of low-cost, standards-based information technology among family physicians, nationally and internationally, through consultative, educational and outreach activities. To further these goals, the Center has developed and/or participates in several innovative projects.

-- Information on the federal government's push for "meaningful use" of certified health information technology.
Federal Health-IT Incentives
-- Information on federal incentives for using health-IT such as electronic health records and e-prescribing.
Physicians' Electronic Health Record Coalition (PEHRC)
-- A coalition to assist physicians, particularly those in small- and medium-sized ambulatory care medical practices, to acquire and use affordable, standards-based electronic health records and other health information technology to improve quality, enhance patient safety and increase efficiency.
Government Health IT Advocacy
-- The Center for Health Information Technology works closely with the AAFP's Government Relations division to monitor governmental activity on health information technology.
AAFP Physicians Direct
-- An affordable and easy-to-use internet-based clinical messaging service for health care professionals, AAFP Physicians Direct allows physicians to connect and share information like never before.
AAFP Clinical Data Repository (CDR)
-- Pilot project to establish clinical and financial metrics for participating practices.
ASTM Continuity of Care Record (CCR)
-- A project to develop an XML document standard for a summary of personal health information that clinicians can send when a patient is referred and that patients can carry with them to promote continuity, quality and safety of care.
PDF/H Best Practices Guide
-- PDF/H (PDF-Healthcare) is a portable, secure and universal health care data exchange container for Personal Health Records and Electronic Health Records.
