Discussion List Etiquette (Netiquette)

  1. Advertising or promoting of products and services is expressly prohibited on the discussion list. Actions in violation of this rule can and will result in removal from the list.
  2. Please do not type in all capital letters. This is considered the equivalent of shouting. All capital letters for one or two words denoting emphasis is fine.
  3. Please remove the original post from your reply if it is not relevant. If you need to reply to a particular section of a post, it is better to include only the relevant part of that post when replying. This helps keep posts short and easier to manage by all users (e.g., Someone posts a list of questions with discussion for each one. If answering the questions, only put the questions themselves in your reply, not the previous post's discussions.)
  4. Treat all list members with respect. Use "I" language when expressing opinions.
  5. If at all possible, send posts in TEXT format. HTML causes problems for some users, although formatting messages with bold and italics makes for easier reading of long posts.
  6. Please sign with your full name, location, size of practice, and EHR in use (or stage of EHR adoption). This particularly helps new users get to know everyone. This can be done through an automatic signature so that you don't have to type it in each time. In your e-mail program, select "Help," then search for the topic "signature."
  7. As much as possible, please try to keep posts to topics about the various aspects of adopting EHR software. This helps reduce the volume.
  8. If your response or question is highly specific to one post or user, consider e-mailing that person directly as opposed to posting to the entire list (e.g., conversation about mutual acquaintances, meeting up at a conference, etc.). Clicking "Reply" will post to the list. To send a separate e-mail you will need to create a new message using the e-mail address provided in the post.
  9. If you are giving your opinion on a product or service, please make a statement about any conflicts of interest (or perceived ones). If you do not, members of the list will most likely confront you about your motives.
